FAR AFIELD

"Far Afield"  Original Oil Painting  6" X 6"
NFS

For this painting, I turned the reference upside down and played around with the shapes and values, just because I hadn't done this in awhile.  About an hour and a half later, I flipped it upright and made a few minor tweaks to finish it off.  The model is my sister Dianne, and I have loved this photo from the first time I saw it.  Sometimes the timing is just right to paint a particular piece and I am really happy with this one!

FIVE GOLDEN RINGS

"FIVE GOLDEN RINGS"  Original Oil Painting 8" x 10"
NFS

This week's Daily Paintworks Challenge, issued by Akiko White, is to paint one of the Twelve Days of Christmas.  Since I love painting portraits, I decided to include one in my entry as the Fifth Day of Christmas..."Five Golden Rings."  I had a great time playing with the girl's gorgeous green eyes, and of course, adding the gold was kinda cool too.

If you are an artist, you may wish to try this one yourself.  There is almost always lots of leeway for imaginative and unique interpretations of the original concept of the challenge.  If I am not too busy, I may paint another before the next challenge is posted, so check back!

THE GOLDEN AGE...

"AH! ...LAMOUR, LAMOUR"

"AH!...LAMOUR, LAMOUR"
Original Oil Painting 8" x 10", Unframed  $175.00

My early training was in the study of Old Master methods, particular underpainting in the style of daVinci, Rembrandt and Bouguereau, and I still retain a fondness for value paintings in verdaccio, bruno, and grisaille.  There is freedom in painting without worry about color choices, color harmony and chroma.  With this method, even a complex subject is simplified to a degree.

So, yes, I have been painting from the Golden Age.....the Golden Age of Hollywood, that is.  This era of movie making had it all...great stars, great costumes, scripts, and the sets were to die for! I have always been enamored with stars like Kathryn Hepburn, Ginger Rogers and Olivia deHaviland. And then, there were the leading MEN...what an impressive bunch of actors and actresses... inspiring! Black and white only added to their appeal, particularly with some of the dramatic studio lighting, so the Daily Paintworks Challenge from Tamara Geddes, was a delight for me. I painted FOUR of these 8" X 10" oils on canvas. Browse them all while you are there and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.
