Well, color me all caught up!  These three are my Days #23, #24 and #25, all three painted today to catch me up for the "30 Paintings in 30 Days" challenge.  Today has been a fun COLORFUL day and I have enjoyed playing "slap-dash" with my colors, brushes and palette knife!  Of course my palette may never be the same!

I even went to lunch at Ulele with paint on two of my fingers because I forgot to do a check before leaving the studio.  Oh well, such is an artist's life, right?  Believe me when I tell you the Gouda Grouper didn't even know about the pthalo blue!  Psssst.........lunch was AWESOME!

"Highland Mickey", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed
Private Collection

I have been known to pirate a photo or two off my friends' facebook albums, especially when it involves portraits.  I find faces interesting!  Sometimes you have great light, sometimes it's the structure or coloring or attitude.  With Mickey, I really liked all the colorful fleshtones and I always find that challenging.  I wanted to keep this loose, with emphasis on the facial tones and little blending.  Anyway, I sure had fun with him!

I am always watching kids when I am out and about.  Once I was almost accused of stalking because I was taking lots of photos of kids playing on the beach at Clearwater!  The mom accosted me and wanted to know why I was taking photos of HER child.  I explained that I take photos of MANY children and women for reference for paintings.....that I do not paint strictly from the photo, but sometimes just use postures or light effects.  She was not swayed and asked me to delete her child's photo.  THAT was a first!  I produced my copy of photographer's rights (always kept in my camera bag), explaining that any public place is fair game for photographers, but as a COURTESY, I would delete her child's photo.

This is NOT that  I took this photo at another public event...the Florida Strawberry Festival in Plant City.  That event is coming up soon and I always load up on my people references there.  :)

Btw, I am still one day behind in the "30 in 30" challenge.  ;)  Don't worry, I will catch up.  I just had too much fun with this one!

Sooooo..... ok.  Here I am trying to play catch-up for Leslie Byrd Saeta's "30 Paintings in 30 Days" challenge.  I have not painted since the 15th for one reason or another.  My brother came for a visit for a few days and, since I had not seen him in a couple of years, yes, I took that time for myself.  It was a wonderful visit, full of fun and talk and just enjoying each other's company, but definitely too short a visit.

Yesterday, I squeezed in two paintings, but had no time to post them.  Today I managed three more after he left for home, so here they are............  Days # 16, #17, #18, #19 and #20.  Tomorrow I should catch up with #21 and #22 and we are square again!

There is nothing like pressure to inspire you to new color combinations, an economy of brushstrokes and just plain fun experimenting.  In these pieces, I have experimented with drama, color, subtlety, bold and bright choices and loved them all.  What a way to learn and grow!  There is nothing off limits in this challenge as long as I paint 30 in 30.  :)

"Mister Blister", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

For the first time in the few years Leslie Saeta has been issuing this 30 in 30 challenge, I am second-guessing why I signed up yet again.  The short answer is, I love painting EVERY Day!  The long answer is.... I thrive on it!  I re-energize from it!  It relaxes me and satisfies me.  I like pressure and I enjoy learning what I can do in a time crunch of.......say.........45 minutes!

I enjoy pushing myself to paint "on the fly", between appointments and other commitments on my time.  So today, we are treated to Mr. Blister and his pompous attitude!  Enjoy!

"Waiting Room", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

Sometimes you run across an office staff who actually cares about the time you spend waiting for your appointment.  Many times you wait, and wait, and wait........ even though you are scheduled.  Well, it happens in all areas of our lives.  I am always appreciative of the little touches of humanity some office personnel  bring to their environments to make my waiting time, and their work time, a little more pleasant.

"Ralph", original oil painting, 6" X 6"

I just can't help it!  I just cannot stay away from portraits for very long.  Ralph was painted from a photo Mike took several years ago at the Florida Strawberry Festival.  At that time, we were working daily at the St. Clement Make Your Own Strawberry Shortcake booth.  We were on sight off and on (mostly on!) from 5:30am - 10pm and have never had SO MUCH FUN killing ourselves!

We had 2 shifts of 35 volunteers daily (at the festival grounds alone) for the entire 11 days.  Needless to say, many other faithful parishoners worked more than once.  Mr. Camera himself, (Mike) was always in someone's face with his camera.  The reference for this painting was the result of lots of playing around and thousands of photos!  Well, then, there was lots of hiding too!

I sure wish I had taken the time to set up my camera and record on Ustream.

"Misty Morning", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

Today I had lots of fun playing in the trees!  I worked on a couple little studies and liked this one the best.  Although seaming to be a contrast with the wimpy sky and the bright, sunlit grass, the scene did appear this way...I made notes because cameras are tricky tricksters!

"Winter Bouquet", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

Everyone who knows me, knows I don't often paint flowers.  They have complicated structures and I sometimes have difficulty simplifying them.  So, although I am happy with this one, it's not necessarily because it's a floral painting, but because of the punch of light!  The reference was great and I keyed in on a small portion of it to get the composition I wanted, then slapped the paint on.  This one did not work for me until I changed from a white vase to blue.  Don't you just love the sparkle of complements??!

"Strawberry Lemonade", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

If you have ever lived in central Florida, you know that there are two major crops that stand out...citrus and STRAWBERRIES!  The season is in full swing right now, with luscious berries gaining in sweetness from the lovely cool weather we have been having.  The citrus is amazing right now and my lemon tree is loaded!  I'm looking forward to enjoying lots and LOTS of this concoction on the deck in the coming weeks.  The weather is ripe for it!

"Dapper Dan", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

This guy was just so cute, perched on the wooden rail.  I love the free flowing feathers and the sharp contrast between warm and cool and particularly that electric blue!  I almost went with a lime green background, and almost wish I had, but the orangy yellows play so well against the blues, while complementing the orange-reds, so I left it.  Maybe the next one.....

"Straight Tequila Night", original oil painting, 6" X 6", unframed

Well............just don't ask!  LOL  Suffice it to say, tequila is NOT my drink, but I conceived my Day #8 painting at 10pm and finished at 11:20.  I work pretty well under pressure; this I have always known.  Here's to you MJ!

"Chill", original oil painting, unframed, 6" X 6"

Here in Florida we are expecting a little cold snap this week, and as I expected, it put me in the mood to paint another Winter scene.  This is a pirated reference from my sister Dianne's facebook page....shhhhh.  I am not sure whether or not this is a creek that runs through her property, but it's possible.  She lives in Kentucky where even the most common scenery is hard to beat!  This image came through brighter than the painting, but I have not been able to adjust it properly.  If you click on my Daily Paintworks auction, you will see a more subtle version and one that is more true to the original painting.

I always enjoy the gulls whenever we are near the beach.  I love to hear them call to each other and even like the frenzied cries when they spot a dropped morsel of food!  I am not sure where we were when I took the reference photo for this little portrait, but I knew I would enjoy painting him.

Gulls are peculiar birds, nearly always facing the ocean when they stand on the beach.  I thought this one seemed unable to make up his mind which view he preferred.

"Pastured", original oil painting, unframed, 6" X 6"

Animal paintings have always been a love of mine.  When I first started painting, I wanted to be another John Seery-Lester or Carl Brenders.  National Geographic magazine was my best friend.  Then I discovered portraits!  There is nothing like painting  facial expressions and striving for a likeness.

I still enjoy a return to the roots of my painting journey.  Pet portraits are great fun for me, but farm animals are just the BEST!  Those guys have attitude!

"Silver and Gold...en", original oil painting, unframed, 6" X 6"

Small kitchen still life paintings are a subject I truly enjoy.  They can be as bold or as subtle as you like and they go with nearly any kitchen, since they most often have food in them!  I have three in the space under my upper cabinets.  They really dress up the area nicely.  It keeps me from cluttering up the counter and hiding the artwork, plus...I can change them out as often as I like without a lot of trouble.

"Early Light", original oil painting, unframed, 6" X 6"

Dawn in the country is always a sight to behold!  I grew up in rural Kentucky and really savor my opportunities to go back to those rolling farmlands, no matter the season.

We don't get much "Winter" in Florida, so I expect to paint a couple of snowy scenes during this challenge.  Stubby, snowy fields are fun as well as challenging.  The ruts and uneven ground left after the harvest make the ground undulate in weird and beautiful ways.

I work with brushes and/or palette knife, depending on what I want from the medium.  Slathering on paint in some areas and brushing others helps to define the center of interest, achieving both energetic and calm areas.

"Daybreak"  Original oil painting, 6" X 6" unframed

I thoroughly enjoy painting roosters and chickens and almost always paint one or two for this challenge.  This is from a photo reference I took in Kentucky at a friend's house when I stopped in unannounced and she was not home.  I gathered black walnuts from the trees lining the road to her drive, snapped some photos and went on my merry way.  :)

I love the vibrant colors and particularly the posture of these fowl.  That strutting walk and thrust out chest with tail feathers high just inspire me and I hope I never get tired of painting them!  Who can resist?  Not I!
